Geld macht glücklich! Oder doch nicht?

Werfen wir zunächst einen Blick auf eine aktuelle Studie, die diese Fragestellung aus einer etwas anderen Perspektive untersucht hat. „Moral transgression corrupt neural representations of value“ so der heftige Name der Studie? Kurzum: Welchen Einfluss hat unmoralisches Handeln auf die Gehirnaktivität.

Das neuronale Belohnungssystem ist der Bereich, in welchem die Messung der Gehirnströme für diese Studie stattgefunden hat und siehe da: 

Geld macht durchaus glücklich ABER jetzt kommt‘s: Sofern es seinem Besitzer nicht entgegen moralischer Vorstellungen zugekommen ist. Was können wir also aus der Studie für uns mitnehmen? Das mithilfe von Manipulation, Ausbeutung oder Lügen erworbenes Geld zwar kurz Freude bereitet, allerdings nicht wirklich glücklich macht. Eine weitere in meinen Augen sehr wichtige Erkenntnis aus einer von Forschern an der University of Harvard durchgeführten Studie ist die folgende: Was langfristig glücklich macht sind stabile soziale Beziehungen.

Last but not least lassen wir jetzt noch (wie sollte es auch anders sein..) Zahlen sprechen: steigt Dein Jahreseinkommen von Euro 15.000 auf Euro 30.000 kommst Du aus dem Grinsen nicht mehr raus, das empfundene Glück steigt exponentiell, das geht bis ca. Euro 60.000. Danach is Feierabend. Ok ganz so krass vielleicht nicht, aber Forscher fanden heraus das dies der Punkt des abnehmenden Grenznutzens ist. Kein geringerer als Daniel Kahnemann bekannt vor allem durch das Buch „Schnelles Denken, langsames Denken“, hat gemeinsam mit Angus Deaton diese Zahlen rausgehauen und ich denke da ist was dran. Demnach, macht mehr nicht glücklicher, es ist hinterher ohnehin nur noch ein Symbol für Macht.

Was machen die Leute mit mehr? Sie erkaufen sich teure Reisen bzw. Freizeit durch das Einstellen einer Putzhelfe etc. alles um also Freizeit zu genießen oder überhaupt zu erhalten. Mein Fazit: es ist gut seine Rechnungen bezahlen zu können und besser seine Zeit mit Menschen zu genießen die man einfach gern um sich hat.

Morality and money

Money makes you happy! Or not?

Let's take a look at a recent study that examined this question from a slightly different perspective. "Moral transgression corrupt neural representations of value" is a strong name for a study, isn't it? In short: What influence does immoral behaviour have on brain activity?

The neuronal reward system is the area where the measurement of brain waves took place and lo and behold: Money makes you happy BUT here's the thing: As long as it hasn't gone against moral concepts. So what can we take away for us from the study? Money acquired through manipulation, exploitation or lies may give pleasure for a short time, but it does not really make you happy. Another, in my opinion, very important finding from a study conducted by researchers at the University of Harvard is the following: What makes people happy in the long run are stable social relationships. Last but not least, let's look at the figures: if your annual income rises from 15,000 euros to 30,000 euros, you won't be able to wipe that grin off your face, and the happiness you feel will increase exponentially. Ok, maybe not that blatant, but researchers found out that this is the point of diminishing marginal utility. No less than Daniel Kahnemann, who is best known for his book "Fast thinking, slow thinking“, together with Angus Deaton, has chiseled out these numbers and I think there is something to it. According to this, more does not make you happier, it is only a symbol of power afterwards anyway.

What do people do with more? They buy expensive travel, free time by hiring a cleaning help etc. everything to enjoy or even maintain free time. My conclusion: it is good to be able to pay your bills and better to enjoy your time with people you simply like to have around you.
